Finzi International Composing Competition

To discover and support composing talent and choral composition around the world, The Finzi Trust is proud to launch the Finzi International Composing Competition.

Applicants are invited to compose a choral work in response to Finzi’s Lo, the full and final sacrifice.

The competition offers a top prize of £2,500 and the opportunity for the winner to have their work recorded on film with the internationally renowned Choir of Trinity College Cambridge under Dr Stephen Layton MBE.

The winning piece will also be considered for publication by Boosey & Hawkes.

Applications are welcome from composers at any stage of their career for whom composing is an important part of their musical portfolio.

The shortlisted entries will be judged by a prestigious panel led by:

APPLICATION CRITERIA
  • Applications are welcome from composers at any stage of their career.
  • Entries should comprise a choral work written in response to Finzi’s Lo, the full and final sacrifice.
  • The work should be for SATB, with or without divisions, and should last no more than eight minutes.
  • It may be either unaccompanied or accompanied by organ.
  • The connection to Finzi’s work is up to the composer to interpret, and the original text may either be used or substituted at the composer’s discretion.
  • Entries should be submitted as PDFs with an accompanying sound file.
  • In addition to the score, applicants should also write a short programme note (no more than 500 words) explaining their inspirations and composing rationale.
  • An application fee of £25 is payable per entry and should be transferred on submission to:

  • The deadline for entries is 30th June 2023
  • Initial shortlisting will be undertaken by an internal panel from the Finzi Trust board and will be completed by 1st September 2023.
  • A shortlist of 10 entries will then be drawn up by the main judging panel with the overall winner announced by the 30th November 2023.
